The brief

A rooflight is glass set into a flat roof to bring daylight straight down into the room below, in place of a plastic dome.

The unit has to be made to the opening that was actually built rather than the one on the drawing, sit on the upstand that is already there, and keep the room underneath usable in July.

What we made

Sealed double-glazed units made to the measured opening, on a slim frame.

The photographs are mostly taken on the roof rather than styled from indoors, which is the honest version of this job. One shows a glazed roof carried on steel beams over a side return: the same glass in a bigger frame.

The glass spec

A sealed unit with a toughened outer pane and a laminated inner. Toughened outside because it takes the weather and whatever lands on it; laminated inside because it is over your head.

Solar control and a soft-coat low-emissivity layer on the cavity face are the two things that decide whether the room below is comfortable in summer. The upstand and its fall are agreed before the unit is ordered, because a sealed unit cannot be trimmed on site.
