Print-at-home measuring pack

Three pages: measuring guide, a rectangular record sheet with the diagonals check, and a 10mm tracing grid for irregular shapes.

Why it matters

Why print it rather than just measure?

The pack is the workshop's own method on paper: where to measure, how many times, and how to record it so nothing is lost between the room and the order. It exists because a mis-measured panel cannot be put right after it is cut.

  • Glass cannot be trimmed later

A cut-to-size panel is made to the numbers you give us. Measuring twice costs a minute; measuring once and being wrong costs a whole panel.

  • Openings are rarely square

The record sheet's diagonals check is how the workshop catches an out-of-square opening on paper, rather than on the day the glass arrives.

  • Shapes a tape cannot describe

The 10mm tracing grid turns an awkward curve or angle into something we can price, draw and cut from.

Inside the pack

What is on each of the three pages

Read the whole pack here before you print it. These are the same instructions, in the same order, that the printed sheets carry, so you can measure straight from this page and print only when you need the templates. Download the three-page measuring pack PDF.

How to measure glass that fits first time

Print at 100% scale, never "fit to page", and check the 100mm scale bar against a ruler before you use any template on these sheets.

  1. Measure twice, in millimetres

Width at the top, the middle and the bottom, and use the smallest of the three. Do the same for the height. Millimetres only: a rounded centimetre is a millimetre of packing on site.

  2. Check the diagonals

Corner to corner, both ways. If the two diagonals differ by more than 3mm the opening is out of square, so write both down and tell us when you order rather than averaging them.

  3. Allow clearance

Glass going into a frame or a channel needs about 2mm of clearance per edge. Give us the OPENING size and we will make the deduction, or give us the exact glass size if you have already allowed for it. Say which one you are giving us.

  4. Recesses and obstructions

Sockets, pipes, taps and tiles that overlap the opening need a cut-out. Measure to the centre of each one from the SAME two edges every time, and say which two edges those are.

  5. Enter the numbers in the configurator

The price and a technical drawing of your exact panel appear as you type, and that drawing is what the workshop cuts from. Check it before you order: it is the last point at which a number can be changed for free.

SW Glass Fulham Ltd. Every order is confirmed with a dimensioned drawing before cutting. Tolerance plus or minus 2mm on cut sizes.

Rectangular panel record sheet

Write your measurements on the printed jig, one sheet per panel, then enter them in the configurator at /glass/cut-to-size. Keep the sheet until the glass is fitted.

The blanks on the printed record sheet and what each one records
What you write downWhere you take it
Width (top) (mm)Across the opening at the head.
Width (middle) (mm)Across the middle, where a frame usually bows.
Width (bottom) (mm)Across the cill or the tray. Order to the smallest of the three.
Height (left) (mm)Top to bottom down the left-hand side.
Height (right) (mm)Top to bottom down the right-hand side. Order to the smaller of the two.
Diagonal A (mm)Bottom left corner to top right.
Diagonal B (mm)Bottom right corner to top left. Compare it with diagonal A.
Thickness needed
In millimetres. The thickness guide gives the trade-standard pick for the job.
Toughened?
Yes or no. The safety check settles whether the position requires it.
Holes or cut-outs?
How many, what size, and the centre of each from the same two edges.

Use the SMALLEST width and height when ordering. Out of square by more than 3mm? Note both diagonals in the order notes.

Irregular shape tracing grid (10mm squares)

Trace the shape, or a cardboard template of it, onto the grid. Mark the overall width and height, then photograph the sheet flat and square-on and upload the photo through the configurator's irregular-shape option. Our team prices it and confirms a CAD drawing before anything is cut.

Sheet size
170 x 200mm
Square size
10mm
Squares on the sheet
17 across, 20 down

Each square is 10mm at 100% print scale; verify against the page 1 scale bar. SW Glass Fulham Ltd.

The printed sheets add the templates this page cannot: a 100mm scale bar to prove your printer did not shrink the page, a full-size panel jig to write the measurements onto, and the 10mm tracing grid itself.

How to measure for the thing you are actually making

The pack covers any rectangular panel. Each of these takes one product and says what to measure first, what the tolerance means for that job, the mistakes that cost people a panel, and exactly what to send us.

Before you print

Measuring questions, answered

How accurate does my measurement need to be?

We cut to ±2mm. Measure in millimetres at three points per dimension and use the smallest, the pack's record sheet walks you through it, including the diagonals check for out-of-square openings.

What about odd shapes?

Page 3 is a 10mm tracing grid: trace the shape, photograph the sheet flat, and upload it through the configurator's irregular-shape option. Our team prices it and confirms a CAD drawing before anything is cut.

Why does the pack insist on 100% print scale?

The tracing grid and scale bar are dimensionally real: 'fit to page' shrinks them. Page 1 has a 100mm scale bar to verify against any ruler.
