The brief
A mirror bought as a product comes in one of five sizes and looks like a product hung on a wall. A mirror cut to the space, wall to wall, or the full width of an alcove, reads as part of the room.
The work is in the measuring and in the cut-outs, because a bathroom wall is rarely empty by the time the mirror goes on it.
What we made
Silvered mirror cut to the surveyed size with polished edges, and a cut-out where a fitting passes through it, around a heated towel rail in one of these.
One is bevelled. The pair in the panelled room are simply cut to fill their alcoves, edge to edge, which is the whole trick.
The glass spec
4mm or 6mm silvered mirror. In a bathroom or a wet room the silvering is a moisture-resistant grade, so it does not corrode back from the edges in the damp; where safety matters the mirror is also safety-backed, so the glass is held together if it is ever broken.
Edges are polished as standard and bevelled on request. The edgework, cut-outs and drilled holes are all workshop jobs rather than site work.
