On the glass

Low-iron or standard float?

Standard float glass is fine

This colour is dark enough to swallow the green cast of standard float glass: on the wall, the two base glasses read the same. Standard 6mm toughened float is the sensible specification here, and the low-iron premium buys almost nothing. Spend it on a sample instead.

How a painted splashback is made

6mm glass, toughened for the heat behind a hob, with the sockets and the hob notch cut before toughening, then painted on the back so the colour sits behind a glass surface that wipes clean. The colour you see is the paint through the glass, which is why the base glass matters and why the surface is always gloss.

Before you choose Sepia brown

A very dark gloss colour shows every smear, water mark and fingerprint, and any unevenness in the paint reads through the glass. Choose it for a kitchen that gets wiped down daily.

Straight answers

RAL 8014 questions

Does RAL 8014 Sepia brown need low-iron glass?

No. Sepia brown is dark enough that the green cast of standard float glass is lost in it, so standard 6mm toughened float is the sensible choice and low-iron adds cost for no visible gain.

Will RAL 8014 on my screen match the glass?

No. RAL 8014 is defined by a painted chip, the swatch on this page is a published sRGB approximation of it, and your screen renders that in its own way. Lacquered glass also reads glossier and a little cooler than a paint chart. Use the swatch to shortlist, and settle the colour with a physical sample in your own kitchen light.

Does Sepia brown cost more than another colour?

No. A back-painted splashback is priced by its glass type (standard or low-iron), thickness and size, and the colour is not a price line. The cost page shows the usual sizes priced with RAL 8014 carried across.

What are the nearest colours to RAL 8014?

In this library, the closest chips to RAL 8014 Sepia brown are RAL 8017 Chocolate brown, RAL 8019 Grey brown, RAL 9004 Signal black, RAL 9017 Traffic black. They are ranked by colour distance between the published values, so a neighbour can sit under a different family heading.
